WOW! It's been a while since I found something non-politcal to have a good old rant about but dear god what's with facebook!? After being harassed for months with invitations by people I usually respect, I finally caved and signed up. What a load of bollocks!

So the idea is we want people to find one another. OK I got that. Then you only really want to link to friends. OK that sounds great. Then once we're connected, we can...send each other messages via a web page. Holy cow! What an idea! I wish I'd thought of that. Even better, when I receive one of these master pieces I get...wait for it...an email telling me there's a message waiting to be read. Fan-bloody-tastic.

My wife tells me I don't appreciate it because I'm not "as social as other people" I suspect it's more because I'm not bored out of my brains at work with nothing better to do with my time or my life for that matter!

Yeah, I don't get it either. Check out the parody: http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w89/pickledpizza/facebook2.jpg

I'm right there with ya. If you think it's inane now wait until people starting sending you virtual rolls of toilet paper or biting you to expand their network of werewolf infections. I read a release yesterday that they now have instant messaging within the site; another stroke of brilliance. It's like AOL's walled garden all over again.

So I just had an idea. How's this for a site: you create an account where you can register any number of email addresses, flickr address, IM names, URLs, phone numbers, whatever. People can search the site for you and when they think they've found you can apply for your details. Upon doing so, you are sent enough of their details to decide if you want then to be able to contact you. If you say yes, then both of you receive each others details. If the details ever change, you're notified. That's it. From then on I can use email, flickr, standard chat clients, etc.

Unfortunately I suspect that it wouldn't really take off; it's far too simple and practical with not nearly enough time-wasting involved. Oh well.

And with this post we have lost the Simon we all know!!! ;)
The Simon who used to write to intelligently about all kinds of technology....

On the positive note it is good having you back and writing something again.

Hahahaha. I guess that's what 3 months in Japan will do to a person :) Or perhaps I'm just getting old hehehe.

To be honest though, there's really not a lot going on in the development world that floats my boat these days. I'm enjoying working with Ruby on Rails but there are plenty of people far more capable at writing about that than I :)

I didn't understand it... until my University buddies started signing up. Being able to locate them, see what they're up to, and be notified of their new photos is a cool deal. Mmmm... I have to look you up... ;)
